Natural Selection

You've heard it said this way:  "Only the strong survive."  Do you agree that this is still true in our modern society?  Do you think it applies to both humans and to other creatures?

  1. Yes I do agree that this is still true in our modern society and applies to both humans and to other creatures. For humans the saying relates to people in the work force and if you have a lot of work to do plus other things in your life, if you’re a strong person and push through it you will survive and nothing can stop you or hold you back. For other creatures like animals for example if they are fighting for food or shelter and had to fight then it would prove who really wants it more when the last animal is standing at the end.

  2. “Only the strong survive.” I agree that this statement is true in our modern society and applies to both humans as well as creatures. In the human sense, it could apply to human in the work place or in general. In a work place if you’re strong, you’ll survive. If things were easy, everyone would do it. However, things in life aren’t easy so you have to overcome obstacles in life. Only the strong survive because others can only put up with so much in life. That’s why they say, “If you find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn’t lead anywhere.” That’s why if your overcome the rough obstacles in life, it’ll make you stronger. On that note, “only the strong survive. In addition, looking at it from an animal standpoint, if you’re dominate from an animal standpoint, then you’ll survive. However, that is not true in every scenario because if you have a predator, you’re likely to not survive. This is like the nutria that don’t have any predators and reproduce rapidly and survive. But if you’re strong in the sense of mentality and physically in an animal sense, you’ll survive.

  3. I agree that the strongest survive. I agree because those who are more stable and fit usually last longer than those who have more problems within their life. Such as the homeless vs. a person who live a well maintained life. The homeless is more likely to die sooner because of the lack of nutrients and the failure to maintain his or her body. For creatures I think it various because of its predators. Such as the variations between k-selected and r-selection and its environment. Example of it would be an alligator with an roach, the alligator probably wouldn't go after a roach because the alligator would want something more fulfilling. So the statement "Only the strong survive" various among species.

  4. I believe it does but in a completely different context than in the past. Now its The people who are mentally strong that survive not the physically strong.Brains over Muscles because muscles are useless without the brain. Those who manage the biggest companies in america and Europe are mentally strong. It applies to both humans and animals but in different contexts of the word. Animals need to be strong to survive in the wilderness or in there habitats which aren't really as stable as the humans habitat or living area, but being strong applies to both in one similar way it is for competition for resources. Although it is not completely applied in the same way it was in the past,"only the strong survive" and as Darwin says its "the survival of the fittest." The only way to be fit for this world and society is to have a Strength of will and to be mentally Prepared.

  5. I totally agree with this statement is still true in modern society. It has always been around for centuries and decades. However I believe that this applies to both humans and animals and other creatures. Most humans that take life seriously and dont play around are usually the one's that tend to survive or are the strongest one. The one's who take life for granted and don't really care are the weak one and can't overcome and obstacles in life.

  6. I honestly believe the phrase "only the strong survive" applies mainly to creatures and not to so much to humans. Today, we humans are exposed to technology and it has helped is to survive and thrive. Unlike other creatures who are not affected by technology, the strongest species will end up surviving because they will fight to the death for food. As human beings, we may not know how simple we are able to survive in modern society because of the advanced technology that we possess. We revolve ourselves around technology which helps us to cure diseases. Creatures living in the wild, do not have the technology that we have to cure themselves from diseases. I believe it's an animal instinct to know that only the strongest survive because in the animal world different species are constantly fighting each other to see that only the strongest survive.

  7. Indeed it’s true that only the strong survive still in our modern society. This applies to all living creatures including human, plants and animals. Most animals compete for food, shelter, space and for other necessary materials which they need for survival. Most of these animals take advantage of others, because of the facts that they are strong enough to kill their mates. Example is a predator and its prey (barn owl and rat, lion and zebra). Plants also greatly compete for sunlight and nutrients from the soil for growth and survival.Only those with long roots are able to get sufficient water and other organic materials from the soil to sustain their life cycle. Even we as human, there is struggle among us mostly at home, workplaces, and market places as well. Since only those who are strong and hard working are able to survive the society.

  8. I do believe it and then again I don't. I do believe this because to survive in society you must be strong willed and have tough skin. I feel you must be strong because people just don't give handouts you must work hard for what you want. Then again I don't because people tend to baby the weak people in society so they let them slide by and sometimes get things without working as hard as they should. I believe it defiantly applies to animals because it's the wild, there are no rules.

  9. I believe that in our modern society that the saying that "only the strong survive" holds very much true especially when it comes to a matter of wealth and social status. In today's society if someone has the wealth to satisfy their own needs and more, sometimes there is a distinctive attitude amongst the wealthy where the "I got mine, go get your own" mentality begins to introduce itself. At this point sometimes the positive attitude of the wealthy towards the lower social classes can begin to diminish and ultimately impact the current and future state of those lower social classes. Therefore widespread problems such as starvation, poverty, and a ultimate lack in essential resources begins to become more prevalent in those areas that suffer from neglection from the upper social classes. In a sense this situation can be applied to creatures in the animal kingdom that have to struggle and become confrontational with their competition in order to acquire their natural resources. In the animal kingdom whichever animal(s) has the distinctive features of a dominant predator, the less dominant animal(s) now becomes apart of the prey and are now vulnerable to a variety of threats contributed to them by their mistreatment from their dominant counterparts.

  10. In our modern society I don’t believe “Only the strong survive”. In today society we rely on technology for almost everything we do. Technology has allowed us to thrive as a society and use most of our energy to live then worry about surviving. Yes, there is a lot of competition around our society, but it is not a compaction for survival it’s competing to thrive in our society. "Only the strong survive" can be applied to other creatures, animals that live in harsh environments have a lot of competition not only in there specie but other species as well. I also have heard of the saying “survival of the fittest”, do to evolution some animals are naturally dominant over others. These animals have adapted to their environment and sometimes other environments as well making it easy for them to move up the food chain.

  11. Yes, I do think that “Only the Strong Survive” to both humans and animals. I believe that it applies to humans because many times in school and in workplaces people give up real easy due to certain struggles, or even certain task that people may feel is challenging. From personal experiences I have given up in the past when I faced tough challenges in my classes. I could have prevented the grades I got in those classes but I had given up to fast. I believe if I was stronger and spent more time on studying and seeking for help I think that the outcome of my grades would be much better like how they are this semester. “Only the Strong Survive” in the animal habitat because usually the weaker animal dies or gets hurt because it can’t defend itself to bigger and stronger animals.

  12. I believe this statement is true. In our modern society we don't have to rely on physical strength to survive because we are now mentally strong. the technology and medicines we made and improved shows how strong we (humans) are because the technology and medicines which helped us to survive. I believe that this statement applies to both humans and other ceatures but humans rely on mental strength while animals have to rely on physical strength to survive.

  13. No, I personally do not believe that the idea of “Only the strong survive” still holds entirely true in today’s society: at least not entirely. It may hold true in certain aspects of life, like education and competition between the leaders of the future in most countries, but beyond those, I do not believe it applies as much to us today as it does to animals. Applying “Only the strong survive” mentality to everything in human society today is not the wisest move. It’s the equivalent of saying to a sick person, “No, I am not going to call the doctor. If you’re meant to live, you’ll survive on your own” and I’m quite sure no one would enjoy the idea of leaving their loved one to survive on his or her own. That person would try to intervene to save that “weak” person. Today’s advancement in medicine too have helped close the gap between the “weak” and the “strong”, giving everyone about an equal chance of survival on this planet. That and the fact that there is a certain survival advantage to sticking together, rather than pulling away from each other (safety in numbers). If anything, we are probably the smarter ones on this planet for sticking together. When it comes to the world of animals however, I believe that the “Only the strong survive” idea works there. Animals, unlike us, do not have the ability to alter their health and surroundings. Basically, they are not as intelligent as we are and therefore, are naturally forced to live under the “Only the strong survive” rule.

  14. I do not agree with this statement at all. Our common day society is now based on, not how strong a person is or how well he can survive in the wild, but rather technology and how much money the person has earned and or was passed down to him. Survival is hardly needed now. We now mainly rely on technology, like cars or any forms of transportations and even the enternet to help us survive. This is mainly towards humans, but animals can also be included. But I do think this statement can be used with pets because as humans we wa t the best and it is hard to settle for anything less. If someone were to chose from a healthy very active pet from a almost dead slump pet, it is clear which one the person would chose, the healthy one. So survival of the fittest can be seen thought this.

  16. I am on the fence with Darwin's idea of "Only the strong survive." When it comes to nature I say yes it still applies and is a great thing. It is what helps further evolution in all living things even us humans. It also shows how needs and environmental change can affect the development of a certain species. As far of the idea socially I am against the idea of Social Darwinist and know it doesen't apply anymore. Social Darwinism is what leads our society to monopolies such as Rockefeller and Carnegie this really hurts the smaller businesses and allows the strong to dictate how much the rest of us will pay, especially if we can only buy off of their product.Luckily they wrote laws preventing this from happening again. So in conclusion it depends on what we apply Darwin's thinking to, to help see if survival of the fittest is a productive mindset to have.

  17. I believe that "only the strong survive" does not apply to our society today. I think this because people don't really have to fight and compete for the necessities. If you had a strong athlete versus a weak gamer who eats junk food and plays call of duty in who could get food then this statement wouldn't apply. They could both just simply go to the store and buy some food. They will both survive. If we talk in terms of surviving like reproducing then they are still evenly matched because they both have the same chance to reproduce because there will be someone who will be attracted to them. The statement does not apply.

  18. In my personal understanding of society i believe it is evident that the statement "only the strong survive' is true. In this day and age you have to be mentally and physically strong to survive and fight life's struggles. For example you can take the single mother raising her two young boys in Newark, working a minumum wage job. This woman has to fight day in and out to secure her future while a woman living in Livinston or Ridgewood, and working in a hospital as a doctor doesn't really have to. One must fight harder than the other. Now i also believe this statement is true for other species because their is always something out to get you in life and you ave to adapt to survive and grow stronger, wiser, and bigger to beat or ward of enemies or likely predators.

  19. I do not believe that the statement "only the strong survive" applies to us humans because we are not animals living in the wild. We are the top of the food chain so who exactly are we trying to survive from. I believe a different statement applies to humans and that statement is "only the smart survive." When I say smart i mean book but also street smart because being street smart can be a very important quality for a person.

  20. Yes, I do believe "only the strong survive." I believe this statement still stands true today because you have to be mentality strong. Meaning that you have to want it more than others. For example if you play basketball, you cant just wake up one morning and say I want to make it to the NBA and it will just magically happen. You have to work harder than everyone else around you to survive or make it to the top. I believe this is true for animals as well because for example if there are two sharks and one fish left and your survival depends on eating that fish, the shark who eats the fish will survive and the shark that doesn't will die. So I do believe the statement "only the strong survive."

  21. Yes, I absoloutely think the statement 'only the strong survive'. It defenitely still is involved in modern society.I think it still is followed by humans because we all compete for things like money. So the statement 'only the strong survive" applies to humans.Even though us humans are k-selected meanig we should have a stable environment. As humans since we always compete for everything only the most common sense and street smarts will get you by in society.

  22. Yes, I agree with ths statement because it is a tough world and it can break you if you yourself vulnerable to it. Especially humans who are "k-selected" are very competitive and will do anything to be one top makes the world even tougher. I think this statement does not apply to animals because I dont think it's a tougher world as humans and I think they have more of their species that protect each for life but for humans once we are adults we are on our own. Especially in our modern society I think statement is very true because it's very compettive when businesses are trying to top each other's new inventions for more sales and money .

  23. My response Continued...
I don't think that this applies to everyone. It applies to the creatures other than humans because they can't do what we do. They have to fight and work for what they need. They have to work harder to survive so the statement does apply for them.
