The Mediterranean

The Mediterranean

The Mediterranean biome is found in some parts of the continents. It is found on the west coast of the Unites States, the west coast of South America, the Cape Town part of South Africa, the Western tip of the Australia and the coastal areas of the Mediterranean. If you want to go over to visit places like the Mediterranean, you will need a lot of sunscreen and water. We can find it in California, at North America. In this biome, its a hard place for plants and animals to thrive.

Climate

Climate - Subtropical, occasional thunderstorms in the summer, and during the winter: polar jet stream, meaning strong winds at the upper part of the atmosphere, occurs, causing rain, and a large amount of snow, because of this areas that are affected by this have little precipitation during the summer.

  • little annual precipitation = 10-20 inches of rain a year
  • average winter rainfall = 6.8 inches
  • average spring rainfall = 2.2 inches
  • average summer rainfall = 0.2 inches
  • average fall rainfall = 4.2 inches
  • average annual temperature = 59 F
  • highest temperature = as high as 91 F
  • lowest temperature = as low as 37 F
  • average winter temperature = 46 F
  • average summer temperature = 71 F
  • average spring temperature = 56 F
  • average fall temperature = 65 F
  • summers = dry & hot
  • winter = cool & moist
  • Mediterranean climate is hot and dry in the summer with rainy and cool winters.

Physical Characteristics

  • They are flat plains, rocky hills, and mountain slopes.
  • When you are thinking of the Mediterranean, you could think about the movie "Wild West" too.

Animals
  • On this biome there is animals such as: wild goats, sheep, cattle, mouflon,  horses, lynx, wild boar, rabbits, vultures, coyotes, jackrabbits, mule deer, alligator lizards, horned toads, praying mantis, honey bee, lady bugs, and three types of eagles.
  • This area is known for the breeding of the famous bullfighting bulls.
  • Animals have adapted to this biome by becoming agile climbers, foraging over larger areas, and by changing their diet.
  • The animals in this area are all mostly grassland and desert types, that are adapted to hot and dry weather.
  • Imperial Eagles, Golden Eagles, and Bonelli’s eagles

Plants

  • They’re are plants such as: evergreens, cacti, olive and fruit trees, and cork oak.
  • Plants also need to adapt to this biome.
  • Plants adapt to this, by learning how to store water in thick bark, or waxy coverings.
  • To prevent animals from eating them, plants grow out thorns to protect themselves.
  • Plants in this area have small, hard leaves which hold moisture.
  • Some plants that are in this area are poison oak, scrub oak, Yucca Wiple and shrubs, trees and cacti.
  • There is a lot of shrubs found here.
  • Plants are often adapted to conserve water and survive a summer drought.

Why Is It Important?

  • It provides essential protection against erosion.
  • It allows underground water supplies to recharge.
  • It defines California as a place.
  • It offers unique opportunities to remain connected to nature on a local level.
  • It moderates local climates.
  • It provides an important habitat for an interesting assortment of animals.

  1. Your information is so thorough, and I liked your effort to make it relatable (like the sentence where you compared the biome to the "Wild West"). Be careful with runon sentences (like the one in the climate section), and contractions (they're=they are, it's=it is). I also found the information about how plants adapt to this biome to be interesting; the info reminded me of the plants movie we watched.
