Deer Culls in New Jersey
Garret Mountain, in Passaic County, has an unsustainably large deer population. The animals have virtually destroyed the forest understory, and often migrate onto local highways. However, efforts to have a deer cull are met with resistance by local residents. Create a list of the pros and cons of a deer cull. Then, state your position on whether or not you support the cull, and explain why.

Deer cull:
ReplyDeletePros- it keeps the deer population under control, provides food to residents and i belive to people in famine, and its better and quicker way to kill the deer rather than letting them die in a slow, painful death due to the harsh winter.
Cons- their may be an increase of cases of friendly fire, the cull may put the deer, in that area, into extiction, and several animal organizations may may start protesting the cull and cause a problem.
I'm for the deer cull. As much as i love animals,
the deer population is becoming an huge issue and there is no other solution unless people want to keep them as pets. Its obvious the pros are much greater than the cons. As much as people don't like it, we have to come to the fact that humans are more important than animals.
Pros: The deer are eliminating a lot of the forest which contains food source for other animals and might be putting other animals at risk. The deer cull will also get rid of the danger that the deer are creating by walking onto the highways and running into traffic. Lastly, the cull is not killing the deer but putting them somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteCons: If we do not go forth with the cull instead of them being safely removed from the area they might end up being killed and also start a huge hunt toward the deer and might even put at risk the population of the deer. Finally, the deer might can cause the extinctin of animals and also rare plants of the region.
My view on this topic is that I support the deer cull because we are not causing any harm to the deer by moving them and if we leave them as they are, there is a huge amount of danger and harm that they cn cause. I feel like this decision is to obvious of a choice to make and we must go forth with the deer cull.
Pros: Since there is an overpopulation of deer within that area, a deer cull will be a good solution because it'll control the amount of deer on the mountain. Also, we're not killing the deer we are moving them to a safer environment, so its for their benefit.
ReplyDeleteCons: Some deer have migrated towards local highways, therefore, more accidents are likely to happen. This is a huge threat to people, especially at night when the area is harder to see. The more deer there are in the area leads to the decline in resources.
I think that deer cull should be supported by everyone because its a safe and legal way to control the environment. people are simply removing the deer, and placing them in a better habitat. This is to the deer's benefit because if they are not removed, they will most likely be killed by either a car or hunters.
Pros: It keeps the Deer population under its carrying capacity. Other animals will have more food resources, since the deer’s aren’t there to take it. The cull will also decrease the danger that the deer are putting us humans in by walking on highways.
ReplyDeleteCons: If we do kill the deer, then some animal organizations will go against this idea of a deer cull. Deer can go extinct, especially if other counties like this idea of a deer cull. Also if deer go extinct, then that will affect other animals that live off of them.
I like the idea of a deer cull because if we move the deer to a safer place then that will benefit the deer and us. The deer will live in a safer environment and we won’t have to worry about them causing accidents on highways putting us in less danger.

ReplyDeletePros: The fact that there is an overflowing population of deer, culling deer helps to decrease the amount of deer within a certain area, at the same time regulating the deer population. Culling deer also helps to prevent the descruction of certain woodland areas or habitat lost.
ReplyDeleteCons: Although culling deer has a positive impact on the environment, there is a risk taken when doing so. One of the many concerns of culling deer would be the decrease with its population. Although many are trying to prevent their increase, deer also play a vital role in sustaining the environment around them by providing food or making room for new vegetation to grow.If too many deer are taken out, they may become critiacally endangered or wiped out for good.
I strongly support the culling of deer and believe that by doing so, we are not only helping the deer but also the environment around us. There needs to be a balance in nature and we cannot have too much of one thing. Too many deer would result to the depletion of vegetation and loss of habitat. The increase of vegetation would result to the lack of room for new plants to grow. However, if the deer ate a certain amount of plants, they are doing thier part in making room for more vegetation to grow while the vegetation do their part in providing for the ecosystem around them.
Pros:A deer cull would stabilize the deer population and as a result save the forest understory from utter destruction. In addition to that, the removal of the deer would prevent highway accidents that could have otherwise lead to multiple human deaths and casualties.
ReplyDeleteCons:The deer cull could cause an uproar and spark a lot of controversy. The convulsion would most likely come in the form of mass protests, which are usually accompanied by unwanted media attention. In the end, Garret Mountain's reputation will suffer, possibly leading to a decline in tourism.
In conclusion, I believe that the matter should be presented to the entire town or an unbiased jury of some sort that would vote on the issue, in an honest, democratic, and American fashion. Then the result of the tally would determine the outcome of the issue. But if I were the mayor of the town I would simply approve the deer cull but instead of killing the deer, to prevent protests, I would have them transferred to a conservation were deer populations are suffering.
Due to the vast amount of deer in Garret Mountain, in Passaic County , their are pros and cons as to why deer culling takes place with the local residents.
ReplyDeletePros- Preventing the destruction of the forest understory and migrating to the highway , deer culling can help solve the problem. Its a elimination process of taking away deer , reducing and or stabilizing the amount of deer to prevent death (both humans and deer).
Cons - Likewise to the top-down and bottom-up control , reducing the number of deer can affect others that wish to eat them. ( to prevent depletion of the deer)It gives a alt. resource to us humans.
I honestly think that deer culling should be supported only because of safety purposes. To explain, mainly deer or other animals tend to wander where their not suppose to be. Such as, highways that are highly dangerous that have the potential of hurting/killing drivers and the deer.
Pros of Deer Culling: It will reduce the harm that happens with us humans and the deer. It will also save hunters the time of hunting for food.
ReplyDeleteCons of Deer Culling: Deer Culling can cut down on the food that other animals can consume, which will affect their nutrition.
I am not with deer culling because i don't think it is right to kill a living thing just for space. The deers should just be able to live their normal lives and not have to worry about us interfering with it. If deers are having a problem with running into the highways, then there should be a system to train them to keep them off the road.
Pros of deer culling - Deer culling will definitely help control the boom of deer in the areas they populate and help save the ecosystem these deer may be eating up. They also save other people the aggravation of deer springing onto the highway and actually help from keeping car accidents from happening due to wandering deer. It also gives people who need something to eat some extra food since the deer are being donated.
ReplyDeleteCons of deer culling - Animal activists will be ticked off by our willingness to hunt deer, the surrounding predators will have unusual competition for their meals, and that we are using more resources to hunt the deer down than we normally do.
I am for deer culling because it causes a big unbalance to our environment and it seriously cuts down on our forest space. With deer culling we are not only helping the environment grow normally but we might help our state with starvation by giving the less fortunate deer meat. Also we help employ people who might need a job. So, to me, deer culling is a yay.
Pros- It will definitely help less car accidents and the population
ReplyDeleteof deer will go down as well. Another positive thing with deer culling is it will provide more food for a lot more people for eaxmple the poor and the homeless people.
Cons- A lot of people might take advantage of this and go out and start killing sa large portion of deer. This is where protesting comes in place. People will start to feel / think that this isn't a good idea and should stop before the deer become extinct.
I'm for dear culling because a lot of people would benefit from this in many ways such as being able to obtain more food at an afordible prize. It will reduce the amount of car accidents and deaths that are cause by the population of deer in the area.
Pros: A deer cull will prevent numerous car accidents on the highways and keep the roads safe for drivers. It will also be beneficial to the deer themselves, in an ironic way, since it reduces the level of competition among and makes it easier to find food. The vegetation in the area and smaller species that compete with the deer for resources will have their search of food facilitated by the decrease in deer population.
ReplyDeleteCons: killing the deer is just a quick way to get at what will eventually happen to those deer when the resources will not be enough to feed the population. It is therefore preferable for the environment to make it own adjustments instead of resorting to“deer genocide”.
I personally think that each decision has its disadvantages and advantages. The only thing that will be beneficial to both parties, humans and deer, will be a relocation of the deer by reducing the available resources which will hopefully drive them to other lands, and scatter them across the area.
PRO- There will be less car accidents on the highway. Instead of killing the deer, by culling the deer’s, is a safer way to save a deer’s life because we are just moving them to another environment. Residents won’t have to worry about local deer’s roaming around.
ReplyDeleteCON- Moving an animal from its habitat will make it difficult for it to adapt to another habitat. Families will get separated; yes animals do care for each other. The deer’s are needed in the forest because they may provide resource for other animals. If the deer’s are taken away, then those resources will not be there. In other word keystone species, taking away a specie will affect another specie.
In the end, I’m not in support of the cull because I believe we are taking an animal form its home. Imagine doing that to human, taking someone from their home and moving them to someplace else. I know that accidents on highways is one reason that this cull is taking action, yet again look at where those highways are built on, their home land. I also believe that the cull is being done because one’s the land is clear it will be use to make a new mall or a new hotel. Honestly that’s wrong and when the animals go extinct we can’t blame anyone else, but ourselves. An animal’s habitat is an animal’s habitat and we shouldn’t interfere with it.
Pros: Stabilize deer population, resulting in saving destruction in the forest. Also, less deer equals less accidents of deer running on highways.
ReplyDeleteCons: Having a deer cull will be a quick fix for the problem because what if the deer population after that, on its own ran out of resources. We should let the evironment control it.
I am not for deer culling because we should not kill other living species because they take up our space. It is natural to just let the environment take its coarse on the deer population. The deer can only reach a maximum growth and then start to become smaller and smaller as they run out of resources.
Pros: Deer culling would reduce the level of accidents happening on the highways which then reduces the risk level of deaths for both humans and animals. Not only that but it will keep the environment in that area from being destroyed by the over populated deer lurking around.
ReplyDeleteCons: it would eliminate all of the space we have now to plant vegitations and further more it will mess up the food chain in that environment itself possibly killing other organisms and or species that feed off of it.
In my opinion I feel like we should take into consideration that we shouldn't kill a population just because its overgrown out of proportion. I feel like we shouldn't kill them but we should transfer them into a environment where they lack deer and they are needed.
Pros: Deer cull would create a more stabilized environment regarding the overpopulation of deers which would lead to preservation of trees and the forest. Deers are also often a cause of accidents on the road, so having a smaller number of deers would in theory make the traffic accidents more rare.
ReplyDeleteCons: Nature is not to be modified to a degree where we decide to alter the number of units in a species. This could result in a disruption of ecosystem, meaning that it could cause a chain reaction which could negatively effect other species (and possibly us, too)
In my opinion deer cull is wrong and should never be allowed. We, as human race, should try to adapt to the environment in which we live, rather than killing species that just happen to bother us. In this way, we a are a cruel predator, yet we don't necessarily need to be one. Killing living organisms, especially in large amounts, should never be done.
Pros: By paticipating in the Deer cull you are helping to lower the car accident rates in New Jersey. This also will lead to a not over populated envirinment for them to live in. By getting rid of what usually eats small plants and things of that nature, they will now b able to grow more.
ReplyDeleteCons: By altering with a specific species in a certain environment there is a possibility that you can mess with the ecosystem in which it comes from. It can also affect the people that live in the environment around the culling area.
I on the other hand do not agree with The Deer Cull. It is not safe to do. I also feel as if it is morally wrong to kill off a certain species because it is "over populated". I feel as if most urban cities are populated but we dont go around killing each other because we are.
Pros: Deer culling will reduce the chances of deer overpopulating. Deer culling will help reduce the chance of getting into a car accident on the highway. The deer will also provide nutrients for the human race that some meat sources cannot provide. Also deer culling will allow other different types of organisms, mainly small ones, to live freely and safe in the forest.
ReplyDeleteCons: Deer is a keystone species in the forest environment. It is the home of ticks, it is a food source for predators, and it makes sure that the forest does not become overpopulated by plants and grass so it eats it. Therefore deer culling will reduce the population of the deer’s predators. There will also be a large population of plants and grass in the forest. Also ticks will probably begin to occupy other organisms to survive; possibly ticks will begin to infest areas with an abundant deer population like Livingston New Jersey.
I believe that we should have deer culling to a certain extent. Deer culling should be allowed only when environmentalists or forest rangers can accurately say that the deer is becoming overpopulated. The nutrition in deer meat can help the human body in many different ways especially for the heart. We should not have deer culling for fun because then well will wipe out more than just one species since the deer is keystone specie.
Pros: By killing the deer population we are saving human lives both by prevention and by sending food to food banks to assist starving people. We are also helping to save other animals by saving the resources that all the deer are using up.
ReplyDeleteCons: We could end up killing too many deer with the cull and could wipe out a keystone species in that region.
I agree with the deer cull. I believe the pros simply outweigh the cons and seeing how we are the dominant species, I believe it is important to protect ourselves.
Pros: This could turn out really well for the forest if done in moderation. There would be more vegetation and less deer on the highways. This would prevent plenty of the car accidents and damage causes by deer. There are many deer that loiter in people's backyards where I live. They leave waste and destroy our backyards in the process. The biggesr cons would be the moral wrong of killing deer and the overgrowth of vegetation.
ReplyDeleteSome pro's would be there would be less dead animals on the highway because their would be less deer that would get hit. Another pro is that the car accident rate would decrease less deer cause less accidents. Some con's of the deer cull would be other animals who eat deer would have less food to eat because of the decrease in deer population. As a result these predators might start hunting for food in city areas. I do not support this because taking out the deer can only affect our enviorment negatively. Taking the deer out will only cause new problems to arise in our enviorment an example would be the wolfs and yellow stone
ReplyDeleteSome pro's of a deer cull is that it will save the forest slightly. According to the article, there is a over population of deer in a particular region. They have destroyed some forest lands and slowly, they will be running out of resouces. Having a deer cull will help result in healthy forest, as well as having a stable homeland for the deers. The deers will not have to migrate t local hihways, thus preventing many deaths to both deers and humans.
ReplyDeleteSome con's to a deer cull would be the disruption of the food chain starting from the bottom-up. Many predators that eat deer will begin to die out due to a lack of deer. Another con to a deer cull is that it will be an antropological effect on the environment.
