He was born on April 21,1838 in Dunbar, Scotland, and later immigrated to America when he was 11. As a child, he always had a knack for learning and would begin inventing tools for his family farm at a young age. These inventions were things like a table saw, horse feeders, and wooden thermostats. One day during a fair, John Muir was recruited by the University of Wisconsin after seeing one of his inventions. But in 1863 he eventually left the University of Wisconsin and pursued his dream to study botany and explore the world on foot.
John went on to travel places like all over the world by foot and during every exploration, he would make detailed sketches of the terrain he traveled and write ecology-oriented articles. But as he went from place to place he took on different jobs to support himself. There’s even a story about when he was working at a factory in 1867. He was involved in an accident in which caused him to be blinded for some time. But once he regained his sight, he focused back on his devotion to nature and walked from Indiana to Florida.
In the 1870s he went to the California Yosemite Valley, while there Muir began having his articles published in newspapers. His first printed essay appeared in the New York Tribune and In the paper he offered groundbreaking theories about Yosemite’s geological structures being formed by glacial activity, countering previous scientific ideas. Along with that he also published many other essays pushing for nature conservation. Muir went on to do this for other places like Sequoia, California, Mt. Rainer, Washington, and Grand Canyon, Arizona wherein his articles he pushed for the government to conserve these places so the wildlife and attractions there can be protected. Which then lead to those places all becoming national parks under the US Government, and John Muir was given the nickname ‘father of national parks’.
In 1892 Muir co-founded the Sierra Club and was president of the environmental-advocacy organization for more than 20 years. With the Sierra Club, he made history in 1903 and hosted a three-night camping trip with Theodore Roosevelt. This helped the president make conservationist policies and protect wildlife in the country. Even after Muir’s death on December 24, 1914, in Los Angeles, California, the Sierra Club has played an important role in many environmental projects and government policies. Today the Sierra Club still advocates for nature and has made it their job to educate people about nature and how to take care of it. Also, John Muir is remembered with the metal John Muir Statue which is located in Dunbar, Scotland, and a wooden statue in Sequoia National Park where he is labeled one of the world’s greatest conservationists. Thank you John Muir for your service to nature!

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-134423739889877885.post-89653350093933361972021-03-21T20:21:00.000-04:002021-03-21T20:21:36.428-04:00
<span style="background-color: white; On that day operators were performing safety tests on the RBMK reactor (An RBMK reactor is a giant tank that holds radioactive elements) which included putting the reactor in dangerously low power state. During this low-power state, xenon began to build up causing the nuclear fission process to be blocked which also caused the core temperature to rise, making the water to boil and produce steam. The steam makes the nuclear fission more efficient, speeding it up. This produces more heat which boils the water faster, creating more steam. With all this steam built up and no possible way to escape the steam caused an explosion. This steam explosion caused another explosion where graphite was shot into the air creating a chemical reaction that terminated the nuclear reactions in the core and it was so powerful it made a big hole in the reactor building. The disaster resulted in the death of 28 operators and firemen. In the months to come, several others would die because of the amount of radiation that was exposed to them.

The accident caused the largest uncontrolled radioactive release in the environment. Radioactive substances were released into the air for about 10 days and traveled over Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and to some extent over Scandinavia and Europe. A forest close to Chernobyl has been named the “Red Forest” because so many trees turned reddish-brown and died after absorbing high levels of radiation. Located at Navajo, Arizona, and measuring at 85,542 sq miles, Petrified Forest National Park was discovered in 1853 when the southwest became part of the US. During his expedition to find a route for the railroad along the 35th Parallel, Lieutenant Amiel Whipple ran into the huge Petrified Forest. Whipple and his team documented and illustrated their findings being the first Americans to discover the park. Eventually, when the southwest was developed and people began to move in, the Petrified Forest gained a lot of popularity. The Arizona Territorial Legislature asked the U.S. Congress to make it a national park and they were declined, but finally, in 1906, it was made a national park. Then when the Great Depression came around and the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) was formed; they constructed many roads, trails, and structures in the monument. This helped support Arizona’s case and in 1952, Petrified Forest was made in a national park.

The Petrified Forest National Park is one of many petrified forests in the world. Petrification is a natural process that occurs when all organic material in a tree dies and is replaced by a combination of minerals like quartz, copper, and iron. Once a tree is petrified, the petrified wood is no longer considered wood, and it becomes classified as a stone. The petrification of a forest can take millions of years uninterrupted to complete. This is why there are few petrified forests out in the world, and all of them are national monuments and are carefully protected.

Like any usual desert grassland, Petrified National Forest is filled with a large variety of mammals, reptiles, birds, insects, and plants. And being filled with petrified trees, the petrified forest is home to at least 447 different species of plants including 100 different grass plant species. Some tourists' favorites include the evening primrose, mariposa lily, and the blue fax. Animals in the forest include coyotes, lizards, prairie dogs, scorpions, and many more. Located at Luray, Virginia and measuring at 311.09 square miles, Shenandoah National Park was built in the 1930s during the Great Depression. In efforts to provide jobs for struggling Americans, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was made and thousands of workers were sent to Luray, VA to construct the Park we now know as Shenandoah.

After its establishment and formal opening by Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936, Shenandoah has become home to both hundreds of animals species and plant species, including the Shenandoah Salamander which is an endangered species and cannot be found anywhere else but in Shenandoah and also the beautiful Mountain Laurel shrubs all over the park which were planted by the CCC during their construction. Shenandoah also has Virginia's largest black bear refuge, and is also home to the densest population of black bears in the United States. Also Shenandoah consists of 500 miles of trail including 101 miles from the Appliachian trail and 105 miles of it’s very own 105 Skyline Drive. Which is a road/trail that expands throughout the park with amazing scenery spots and overlooks attracting about a million hikers or enthusiasts yearly.

But not only that but Shenandoah carries a lot of history behind it’s gigantic land. For it used to be the home to Native Americans who lived on the Blue Ridge Mountains many years ago and to European settlers from the 1700s who used to farm the lands. So Shenandoah is filled with exhibits that teach visitors the culture and the way of life of these people who used to live on the land. But overall Shenandoah is a beautiful park full of many things to do and home to many animals and plants.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-134423739889877885.post-2336946487023980702021-01-10T22:05:00.004-05:002021-01-10T22:05:53.487-05:00Love Canal Disaster

The Love Canal Disaster was a calamity that took place during the 1970s in an upstate New York neighborhood near Niagara Falls. A whole town was led to catastrophe as it had been built on top of a toxic chemical landfill. The toxic chemicals had been dumped in what was named "The Love Canal" by several companies and business entities. One of these being the U.S. armed forces who dumped tons of nuclear waste from failed nuclear weapons into the canal. The Hooker Chemical company then purchased the land, dumped a couple thousand more tons of toxic chemicals into the canal and then covered the whole thing with clay. Within the waste dumped in the landfill were cancer-inducing chemicals. After having capped the landfill with clay and earth, the Hooker Chemical company sold the land to the Niagara Falls school board. The Niagara Falls school board proceeded to build a school and many other residential buildings on top of the clay-capped toxic chemical landfill. This would lead to disaster as the layer of clay was dug into and then rained on which interacted with the chemicals who began to wreak havoc on the surface. The chemicals would rise and create acidic puddles with the potential of disintegrating most of what they could touch. People had their car and bike tires melted along with the sole of their shoes. Many children would get burnt after touching these puddles. These were only the immediate effects, as the disaster sported many continuous effects. The rate of infant-mortality, miscarriages, and other birth related issues were abnormally high. Many residents suffered with issues of breathing, epilepsy and various forms of cancer. The health scene at the Love Canal was alarming to say the least. State officials began to get involved as residents were outraged and making headlines on various newspapers and other forms of media. At first they wanted everyone to remain in the town, but soon realized this would not be a feasible nor safe option. The first people evacuated from the town were pregnant mothers and children under the age of two. Soon after everyone was evacuated from the town and it was left as is. The families were given money and assisted in the moving process. The toxic chemical landfill scene as a whole was given new requirements to follow to make sure this type of incident is less likely to repeat itself. Many of the residents who were gravely ill were not able to recover, but this event as a whole was a learning experience for the public when it came to environmental awareness.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-134423739889877885.post-62848101189748656172020-04-19T23:37:00.004-04:002020-04-19T23:37:45.128-04:00Physics ProjectFor my Physics project, I will be drawing three pieces. I believe art does not need to be colorful but needs to be understood. Art has a hidden meaning behind every drawing, and it is up to the viewer on how they interpret it. The world as we know it is under a lot of pressure to create a vaccine to cure the Coronavirus. And with all of this pressure, the world needs a lot of help in order to survive. So for the first piece I wanted to draw something that showed how desperate the world is for help.

Over the break, my dad showed me a photo of a box of medical masks for 150$. I was shocked that people had the audacity to profit off of the pandemic that is upon us. Watching the news, I was pressured to wear masks where ever I had to go. My father was working during this pandemic, and in order to save money, I went with him. My mask became my insurance, and the 12oz bottle of hand sanitizer; which is retailed of about 100 dollars on eBay became my best friend. I was constantly told to keep my mask on, so I thought if it was so important, I should draw one. So for my next piece, I decided to draw a mask.

For my last piece, I wanted to do something big. Every day I would go on the news and see the infection count grow higher than the day before. And with more infections came more death. The bravest among us who are battling the virus are dying. My passion to become a doctor only grew when I saw that so many brave men and women are willing to risk their lives for the good of others. When I get older I hope I can be just as brave as those men and women who are fighting for the sake of others. For the last piece, I wanted to show how much doctors are suffering in order to cure the world
The park is home to many wildlife including the Florida Panther, West Indian Manatee, and the endangered leather back turtle. It costs between eight to fifteenth dollars for a single person and twenty five dollars for a motor vehicle for entry to the park. The Everglades is in the southern portion of Florida and is a wetlands of the tropical variety.
Efforts to have to the Everglades land converted into a National Park were initiated by Ernest Coe in 1928 and finally his plans passed legislation in 1934. Due to the parks size it has three entrances and is spread over three cities.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt;"> <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Agricultural pollution refers to biotic and abiotic byproducts of farming practices that result in contamination or degradation of the environment and surrounding ecosystems, and/or cause injury to humans and their economic interests. The main causes of Agricultural pollution are Pesticides and Fertilizers, Contaminated water, Soil erosion, Livestock, and Pests and Weeds. Pesticides, ammonia, heavy metals, fertilizers, and oils from farms and farm machinery destroy and kill animals, aquatic life, and health problems when they enter drinking water.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

Pesticides and Fertilizers have to deal with local pests and invasive species causing them to be contaminated with chemicals that are not found in nature. Once they are sprayed, it does not disappear completely.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; white-space: pre-wrap;"> Contaminated water is used for irrigation and most of the water we use comes from groundwater reservoirs. While plenty of it is clean, other sources are polluted with organic compounds and heavy metals due to the disposal of industrial agricultural waste.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; white-space: pre-wrap;"> Soil erosion is also a major factor of agricultural pollution because of its topmost layer which holds all the chemicals erodes into rivers, lakes, and streams.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; white-space: pre-wrap;"> Livestock is grown in poor cramped conditions where it's fed very unusual diets and sent to slaughterhouses on a regular basis. Slaughterhouses create emissions into the air which accounts for a large contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; white-space: pre-wrap;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Pests and weeds are exotically grown crops which decrease natural species. With the arrival of new crops, native species have to deal with new diseases, pests, and weeds. Invasive species then destroy local vegetation, altering the ecosystem permanently.
Galapagos' giant tortoise has been extinct for over 100 years. A giant tortoise was found on the island of Fernandina, Ecuador. The tortoise was rushed quickly to a breeding center in Santa Cruz Island, Ecuador. The female tortoise was found by a group of biologists. She was around 112 years old.

A giant tortoise average size is five-feet long with a nine-inch neck. The average weight of these tortoises can be around 550 pounds, depending on its gender. The tortoise spends 16 hours resting and the remaining hours eating or drinking. They rest for a long period because they can last one year without food or water. Mating season usually tends to be from January to May. The female tortoise would move to a nesting area to lay her eggs. A female can lay 2 through 16 tennis size eggs. The one female they recently found had stored sperm for many years. The reason why she did not give birth is that she was lost the islands and there was no male guardian for their family.

Charles Darwin believed tortoises' neck is proof of evolution. Some tortoise has longer necks than others, and the reason why is because food resources can be mostly found from hanging tree branches. Most grass on the island is damaged because the island has active volcanos.
Santa Cruz breeding center produced 1,000 giant tortoises in three months. Species are considered endangered when they have 2,500 or fewer individuals. The tortoises are working their way out of being endangered, and I believe they will achieve their goal in a year.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-134423739889877885.post-68872541862054625682020-03-17T20:20:00.000-04:002020-03-17T20:24:08.709-04:00Petrified Forest National Park

<span style="font-family: "old standard tt" , serif; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Petrified Forest National Park is an American national park in the Navajo and Apache counties along the northeastern area of Arizona. <span style="font-family: "old standard tt" , serif; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">The name comes from the parks feature of one of the world’s largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood, and the<span style="font-family: "old standard tt" , serif; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> chargeable area of the park covers about 230 square miles. <span style="font-family: "times new roman"; white-space: pre-wrap;">The Petrified Forest is known for its fossils, especially its fallen trees that lived in the Late Triassic Epoch, which was about 225 million years ago. The remains containing the fossil logs are part of the widespread and colorful Chinle Formation, from which the Desert gets its name.

<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; white-space: pre-wrap;">Petrified wood is a fossil, and it forms when plant material is buried by remains and protected from decay due to oxygen and organisms. <span style="font-family: "times new roman"; white-space: pre-wrap;">Some specimens of petrified wood are such accurate preservations that people do not realize they are fossils until they pick them up and are shocked by their weight. These specimens with near-perfect preservation are unusual, and rare. However, specimens that exhibit clearly recognizable bark and woody structures are very common. In August 1916, t<span style="font-family: "times new roman"; white-space: pre-wrap;">he National Park Service was created by the Organic Act, it was approved by Congress and later signed by President Woodrow Wilson. This federal bureau within the Department of the Interior was now responsible for protecting the 40 national parks and monuments then in existence and those yet to be established. The purpose of the service was to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations. <span style="font-family: "times new roman"; white-space: pre-wrap;">Animal life at Petrified Forest includes amphibians, birds, insects, spiders, mammals, and reptiles. Birds, lizards and rabbits are seen most frequently, though seasons and weather play a large role in determining what animals are active. <span style="font-family: "times new roman"; white-space: pre-wrap;">Many animals in the park are nocturnal, which is an adaptation not only to avoid high summer daytime temperatures, but also to avoid certain predators.<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">

Furthermore, the top attraction of the forest is called the Painted Desert. <span style="font-family: "times new roman"; white-space: pre-wrap;">It is a U.S. desert in the badlands which is apart Four Corners area running from near the east end of Grand Canyon National Park into Petrified Forest National Park. It is most easily accessed in the north portion of Petrified Forest National Park. The Painted Desert is known for its brilliant and varied colors, that not only include the more common red rock, but also shades of lavender.
